SPED 432
I want you to view this class as a tour-- a tour into preparing not only special education teachers, but general education teachers for the challenges of individualizing programming for “exceptional” individuals. Individualized programming requires an understanding of subject matter, assessment, effective teaching practices for each content area, instructional activities, independent work activities, and commercial programs and software. Instructional, curricular, and adaptive or assistive technological approaches to accommodate the academic, social, cognitive, linguistic, and physical needs of learners with mild/moderate disabilities are reviewed. Based on learning theories, information obtained from this course will center on the use of methods and materials to facilitate learning of elementary/middle grades/secondary students with mild/moderate disabilities.
This class is designed to serve as a tour for those educators interested in exploring these skills. No two students are alike, learning styles and needs are different, no single answer will solve all of your questions. You will be stretched to find those answers just as you will be stretched when you face your students each and every day in school. I hope our joint effort makes your time investment worthwhile and that it will someday make you a great teacher.
Best wishes for a successful academic venture,
Hank McCallum Ed. D.
